Keep your skin healthy after 50
Posted on2021-09-20
Why does our skin age?
Two processes are responsible for skin aging:
1. Intrinsic aging
This is a natural process. Over time, skin cells age and the skin’s maintenance mechanisms weaken:
- Reduced sebaceous and sweat gland activity: the skin dries out easily and becomes less supple.
- Slower cell renewal: dead cells accumulate on the surface, making the complexion dull.
- Loss of dermal elasticity: the skin becomes looser and wrinkles deepen.
2. Extrinsic aging
This process is caused by external and environmental factors such as:
- UV rays — overexposure damages skin cells and accelerates wrinkle formation.
- Smoking — substances in cigarettes damage dermal and epidermal cells.
- Stress — causes premature cellular aging.
- Lack of exercise — reduces blood flow and skin oxygenation.
Does skincare slow down skin aging?
Unfortunately, nothing can stop skin from aging. However, if you’ve been taking care of your skin and protecting it from the sun since your 20s, your skin will thank you at 50. If not, it’s never too late to start!
How to limit the effects of time on your skin
Adopt a healthy lifestyle
- Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated.
- Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation and oxygenation. Sweating also benefits the skin.
- Sleep well and enough to help skin regenerate.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Alcohol makes skin stiff and less elastic, while smoking worsens aging.
Apply anti-aging skincare
Choosing the right anti-aging cream is important, but so are the application techniques:
- Apply your day or night cream after cleansing your face with micellar water.
- Exfoliate gently to maintain smooth skin texture.
- Apply products from top to bottom and from the center of the face outward.
- Extend product application down to the neckline.
- Use a facial mask whenever needed.
Protect your skin from external aggressors
- Cleanse your skin morning and evening to remove impurities and toxins.
- Protect it from pollution and sunlight.
- Avoid sources of stress.
And finally… smile — it’s the best anti-aging remedy!
