Biomimicry: When Cosmetics Take Inspiration from Nature

Posted on2021-07-26

What is biomimicry?

Biomimicry includes all forms of engineering inspired by living organisms. Its goal is not to copy life but to draw inspiration from the natural solutions provided by nature. The most effective answers are often right before our eyes, in the natural world. Since the beginning of time, nature has solved countless problems, so we should take inspiration from it without hesitation.

Biomimicry combines bio-inspiration and sustainability. The idea is to embrace a responsible, sustainable, and resource-respectful development approach.

This concept relies on the main idea that “Nothing is lost, everything is transformed.”

Drawing inspiration from nature's natural solutions.

One of the most famous examples of biomimicry is Velcro. It is used for clothing and inspired by plants with hooks that attach to animal fur to spread their seeds.

Another example is the first flying machine heavier than air, imagined by the Wright brothers, inspired by the flight of pigeons.

In the field of cosmetics, biomimicry allows the creation of creams inspired by living organisms to foster innovation. Designing cosmetic products that serve humans involves studying our environment, such as plants and animals.

Mosquitoes, for instance, are studied to design needles that make injections less painful. This study is based on the mosquito’s proboscis, conical in shape and small enough to slip between pain receptors in the skin. This type of needle is already used in many insulin injector pens.

Skineance uses biomimicry to develop its anti-aging products

Anti-aging products with snake venom:

The snake paralyzes its prey with venom. Anti-aging creams with snake venom use the same paralyzing effect to relax facial muscles. This helps fight against wrinkles and the effects of aging. The anti-wrinkle effect of a snake venom cream is comparable to Botox, but without its drawbacks.

Skineance uses a molecule called Syn-Ake®, created in a laboratory. It has the same beneficial properties as snake venom. This makes Skineance anti-aging creams very effective — your skin appears younger and regenerated.

Unlike Botox, which must be applied by a professional, Skineance anti-aging creams can be applied daily, at home, in just a few minutes.

Anti-aging products made with snail slime:

Snail slime allows snails to heal injuries on their bodies or shells within a few days. It is used in cosmetics for its anti-inflammatory and repairing properties. Thanks to its components, snail slime revitalizes the layers of your skin and helps delay and reduce the effects of skin aging.

Skineance uses the slime of Helix Aspersa Muller snails in its products to treat skin imperfections such as wrinkles or acne. These small snails produce the most beneficial and effective slime for fighting skin aging.
